For the Family
The whole family is at home in Iowa City’s Curious Communities, where young minds are encouraged to explore. Visit the Devonian Fossil Gorge just north of Iowa City, created by the 1993 flood and expanded by the 2008 flood when water topped the emergency spillway. The overflow washed away tons of soil, huge trees, and part of the road, revealing a fossilized Devonian ocean floor.
Discover The Iowa Children’s Museum, located inside Coral Ridge Mall, which offers permanent and changing interactive exhibit environments where children 'play to learn' with unique hands-on educational components that promote learning. Exhibits including Take Flight, Notion of Motion and the Playworks Theatre will keep kids engaged the entire visit. Then rent a pair of skates and take a few laps together around the skating rink during public skate. Before leaving the mall, head to Mellow Mushroom where you can order pizzas to share with fun names like Kosmic Karma.
In the fall months, venture out to Kroul Farms north of Iowa City to pick pumpkins and learn the workings of an Iowa farm. Wilson’s Orchard in Iowa City also sees much fall activity, when families come out to pick apples, drink cider and enjoy hayrack rides. Plus, Colony Pumpkin Patch has a custom designed corn maze to offer a fun challenge each year. In warmer weather, head to Terry Trueblood Recreation Area to rent paddle boats and pedal on Sand Lake, or take a picnic lunch to enjoy at one of the shelters on site.
