The Iowa Arborist Association (IAA) will present the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) sanctioned tree climbing competition at Upper City Park. This year will mark the 12th year of this event which takes place around the state annually. This year also marks the return of this event to Iowa City where the first one was held in 2006.
If you attend this event, you can expect to experience a family fun, action packed day of friendly competition. Competitors will safely perform five events that simulate tree ascent, working in trees and rescuing a life-size dummy representing an injured worker aloft all in majestic oaks at beautiful City Park.
IAA will also be offering an opportunity for kids to wear a tree climbing harness and climb trees in a safe, supervised environment with professional arborists and personal protective equipment. Kids that experience the magic of tree climbing rarely forget it.
The purpose of the International Tree Climbing Championship is to provide educational opportunities for arborists through a safe, competitive event in order to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in climbing
- Introduce new techniques and equipment in a controlled, safe environment
- Encourage the use of industry safety standards and best practices to improve safety
- Provide public education about the industry
IAA and Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) is also presenting a workshop on wood chipper safety held at the park on Friday, October 13th - the day before the climbing competition.
