Lucas Farms History Day

Back to Previous

Annual Lucas Farms History Day is co-sponsored by Johnson County Historical Society/Plum Grove Historic Site and Lucas Farms Neighborhood Association. We will feature the history of two of Iowa's prominent governors, Territorial Governor Robert Lucas and Iowa Civil War Governor Samuel Kirkwood. A free shuttle bus tour with farm related history, architectural history including Moffitt Houses, and biographical history of the neighborhood will run from Plum Grove to Highland Park. At the park there will be pony rides (from 1-4:30, $3 each) and free games, food, and more for kids. It will also feature the Yewell Art Market which features local artists as well as gives homage to early Iowa City artist, George Yewell who painted portraits of both Governors. The Iowa City Community Band will perform at 2 p.m. at Plum Grove and Master Gardeners will be on hand at Friendly Lucas' Garden as part of Project GREEN's Open Gardens Tour. This year, History Day will also feature an indigenous theme with a guest educator and kid's activities from the Black Hawk Museum in Moline. We will also have several other events that will tell the story of Chief Keokuk and the Sauk and Fox of the area.
