A new marathon is coming to the area that promises to be a unique collaboration between Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and all points in between. RUN CRANDIC, powered by University of Iowa Community Credit Union, will take place on Sunday, April 29, 2018 and leave from NewBo City Market in Cedar Rapids. It will conclude at legendary Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.
“People have been talking about a possible marathon route within the Corridor for decades,” said Mark Powers, president of Corridor Running, one of the event organizers. “With the collaboration of the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Greater Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, Go Cedar Rapids, and the University of Iowa Community Credit Union, we are able to bring this to fruition.”
After taking off from NewBo, the route will eventually lead to US-Highway 965 and trek through Swisher on the way over the Coralville Reservoir and into North Liberty. A half marathon route will join the course there as it works its way near Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville. That is where a 5K will start. All courses end at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City with an after party to follow at Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City.
“The teamwork from around the Corridor to put this together has been extraordinary,” said Josh Schamberger, president of the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. “It takes that type of community collaboration to bring this all together.”
All proceeds from the event will be split between the Cedar Rapids Community School District and the Iowa City Community School District to benefit the health and wellness programs. University of Iowa Community Credit Union hosted the announcement at their headquarters in North Liberty and is the lead sponsor of the event.
