There are few venues in downtown Iowa City that can claim the mantle of “cultural anchor” and live up to the reputation. It can safely be argued that FilmScene - one of two organizations working to make Iowa City the greatest small city for the arts - deserves that mantle.

Founded in 2011, this small nonprofit set out to bring the magic of cinema back to downtown Iowa City. FilmScene has since evolved to become a cultural hub, bringing a diverse range of films to our community, including family favorites, independent productions, and classic flicks. The nonprofit also hosts a variety of community events and educational programming that they hope increases film appreciation as well as overall support for the arts.

Whether you want to enjoy happy hour and an art reception at a First Friday event or one of Film Scene’s many special events, you’re sure to find something enjoyable for every occasion.

In need of a fun date night? Check out Moulin Rouge: A Parisian New Year at Film Scene’s Chauncey location, newly opened this fall. This event includes a live stream of the Eiffel Tower, French tunes, a midnight in Paris countdown and toast, and a screening of Moulin Rouge.

If this isn’t for you, there are lots of other options. For those looking for a more family-friendly affair, FilmScene has three separate screenings of Elf this month. If you’re craving something a bit more macabre, Friday the 13th will be featured as a part of the theater’s Late Shift at the Grindhouse program, which features campy classics, horror flicks, and b-movies. If you’re wanting to support local up-and-comers, the venue will be hosting it’s bi-annual open screen event for student and community filmmakers followed by a dance party on December 14th.

FilmScene truly is a not-so-hidden gem in downtown Iowa City. Whether you’re visiting the original Ped Mall location or their new state-of-the-art location at the Chauncey, you’re sure to find something that pleases.

Community members interested in supporting this area nonprofit can purchase various tiers of membership with multiple benefits, including discounted admission and concessions prices, special members-only invitations to events, and Film Scene swag. Individuals can also make donations through their website or via mail.
